Key terms
To help this audience become familiar with the terminology used here

Asset

Marketing material created for a specific channel, such as a welcome email

Channel

Different marketing mediums, such as email, social posts, and SMS, are referred to as channels

Campaign

A marketing campaign consists of multiple assets with related messaging delivered to an audience over time. It can include assets from one or more channels. Example: 2 emails and 1 social post form a campaign

The problem
Dissimilar editors & limited transferability of material over platforms

02

Posts couldn’t be repurposed across channels

Due to the differences in creation flows for each channel, marketing materials, such as emails, couldn't be easily repurposed for other channels like SMS or social posts

01

Dissimilar editors & a steep learning curve

Small business owners experienced significant friction when expanding their marketing efforts from one channel (e.g., email) to others (such as SMS, social posts, and events) due to the steep learning curve associated with different editors

Revenue impact
Improvements proposed would also address these business goals

Reduce maintaince cost of dissimilar editors

Standardizing the editing and scheduling experiences would also reduce the effort required on our end to maintain these disparate processes

Potential boost to retention rates by 18%

Based on existing data, users who were successfully posting across multiple channels were 18 times more likely to continue using the product. The easier we made it, the more users were likely to return and stay on.

Two step solution
An integrated editing (& scheduling) tool, powered by AI creation & guidance
An integrated editing (& scheduling) tool, powered by AI creation & guidance

01

Integrated Editor for Email, Social and SMS

We redesigned the platform’s editors into a unified, user-friendly editing experience, encouraging multi-channel use with AI-generated posts & recommendations, content repurposing, and enhanced editor usability.

02

The Universal Scheduler * (discussed separately)

Design a unified scheduling experience to work in parallel with the Universal Editor, that supports multiple channels, including email, social media, and SMS. Through it, provide context and smart recommendations to help users confidently schedule their communications.
This was its own extensive body of work recorded separately, to read more follow the link below!

Process

Brainstorming &
initial research

02

Initial brainstorming (illustrated below)

We unified entry points into a single "Create Panel," helping users visualize content across platforms. Here, we also explored a shopping cart-style "switcher" for storing drafts

01

Insights from parallel industries (Ex. e-commerce)

Unlike competitors like Hootsuite, Buffer, and Sprout Social, which focus on a single channel, we faced the unique challenge of 'context switching' across multiple channels. To solve this, we drew inspiration from e-commerce shopping carts and marketplaces

Lo-fi sketches
Testing initial ideas
of the "Create panel" entrypoint and a shopping cart like "switcher", over 15 unmoderated tests

20

We tested the flow entry point, the placement of the AI-powered prompt generator, and a remix feature—an idea that excited users and was retained but incorporated differently going forward

What worked
based on usability testing

02

The idea of the Create Panel was well received

Users were very receptive to the idea of a template marketplace and integrated AI generator.

01

The flow was intuitive

Participants found the email creation and editing flows highly intuitive and easy to navigate.

What needed improvement
based on usability testing

02

The onboarding experience needed improvement

Due to the unique flow, users needed more guidance initially. Once familiar, they navigated easily but required instructions to get started

01

Users encountered friction at the first step

Many users found the path to the editors time-consuming, with some saying it slowed their creative flow

Revising the solution
based on user feedback

01

Pivoting to an editor-first experience with integrations

Usability testing showed that while individual elements worked, the flow was reversed. Users needed quick access to the editor first, with AI supporting rather than dictating the creative process

Final designs

Design goals revisited
after user testing

02

A thorough onboarding experience

We also realized that the unique flow would require robust guidance, regardless of its ease of use. (This work was later taken over by a different team.)

01

Re-imagining the flow for faster access to editing

Testing revealed that users preferred quick access to the editors, finding pre-entry suggestions more frustrating than helpful. In response, we streamlined entry through familiar touchpoints, then leveraged the editor space to spark creativity and use AI for multi-channel asset suggestions

03

Minimize friction and inspire at key moments

We flipped the problem on its head, returning to the drawing board and realizing that the flow needed AI and UX to collaborate with users, rather than simply presenting options for them to choose from

Campaign asset hub augmented with AI generated posts

20

The Asset Manager

Drawing inspiration from parallel industries, we introduced a 'Cart' feature within the unified editor, prompting users to think beyond single channel campaigns. Users could seamlessly add AI-driven inspiration, and it became the primary interface for switching between asset types and accessing relevant tools.
